Thank you for this helpful and clear examination of certain phrases that can occur when discernment is bypassed. I have your book Something's Not Right and it opened my eyes to the language of/in coercive environments. Clicking on one of your articles is how I learned about Substack so thank you for that too!

“Over time, this inward turn can reshape a person’s relationship to their own discernment. The desire to examine more closely may appear prideful. The unease that once signaled, “Something’s not right,” can be reinterpreted as anxiety to be overcome or rebellion to be subdued. Instead of asking whether the claim was sound, you may begin asking whether you are.”

So many times, my unease turned inward and became self-condemning—what is wrong with me for feeling/wondering this? I hadn’t realized just how sneaky and twisted so much of the environment was…and everyone else seemed to think it was totally ok. Thank you for this healing series.

Good article Wade, but I think it would have been better if you’d put the questions nearer the beginning, because they are the take home message — the action steps that exhausted abuse victims can put in their survival kit bag.
